UCSD ATHLETICS ASCENDANT

UCSD students have voted overwhelmingly to move to D-I athletics, and Loma is proud to play a continuing role in the initiative.

Ranked as the 17th best university in the world by the Center for World University Rankings, UCSD called on Loma to conduct a study to determine the feasibility of D-I reclassification. Through analysis of best practices from more than a dozen comparable institutions, the study indicated that Division I could help extend the entire university’s culture of excellence, align it with peer academic institutions, improve the student experience, strengthen the UCSD brand, increase alumni engagement and further community connection.

The historic student vote was a key milestone in an ongoing process to move Triton Athletics to the Division I level. Included in this process will be review by the UC San Diego Academic Senate.

Loma continues its work on behalf of UCSD Athletics, supporting enhanced outreach to the regional community, campus institutions and prospective student-athletes.

Over the course of his career, Loma principal (and UCSD grad) John DeBello has worked with more than 20 major university athletic programs, including Stanford, Harvard, Northwestern, UCLA and the University of Virginia. “I see tremendous opportunity for UCSD,” he says. “D-I competition will amplify its culture of excellence and elevate its world-class reputation. All of us at Loma are proud to play a part.”
