Did you know Loma Media’s Principal and Creative Director, John DeBello, directed, produced, edited, scored and co-wrote the 
infamous 1978 film, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes?
This spoof of B movies will be playing at the Balboa Theatre in San Diego, CA this Saturday, June 25.
We thought this would be the perfect opportunity to sit down with John and ask him a few questions about what went into creating this film and, of course, the most anticipated question of if there is talk of a fifth sequel, Attack of the ORGANIC Tomatoes. Here’s what he had to say…
How did the movie idea come about?
John DeBello: Costa Dillon, “The Creator” (who will introduce the movie at the Balboa Theater screening) came up with the title during a conversation with me. I loved it, and the film ultimately grew (in a tomato-like way) from the title. Incidentally, USA TODAY called it “one of the 5 best movie titles of all time.” That accolade undoubtedly includes the actual movie, too.
What was the toughest part of making this movie?
JD: Crashing a helicopter was right up there, and directing 500 extras without a bullhorn came darn close.
What was the best part?
JD: Winning the Oscar, the groupies, the star on Hollywood Boulevard, so many great fantasies. I mean memories.
What is your favorite scene in the movie? And Why?
JD: Has to be the news reporter verbally eviscerating disaster victim Mrs. Williams. Almost Trumpian.
If you could do it all over again, would you do anything differently? If so, what?
JD: I’d wait 25 years so we could build the giant plaster tomatoes digitally. Saves on truck rentals.
Do Heirlooms attack differently than other tomatoes?
JD: More juice, less juke.
With the Organic craze, is there a 5th sequel planned – Attack of the ORGANIC Tomatoes?
JD: Production is slated to start the week after the Gone With the Wind sequel. Thinking of calling it “Birth of a Tomato.” (History written in catsup.)
