A MASCOT THAT MATTERS

The Challenge

Educating a very diverse campus population, Mt. San Antonio College prides itself on fostering an inclusive environment that propels and celebrates success in every pursuit. LOMA was chosen to research, design, deliver and unveil a new mascot that would “capture the College’s unique character, represent the College’s values and engage the College’s dynamic community.”

Passionate opinions about the direction and cultural relevance of the new mascot emanated from every corner of the campus.  Addressing extensive feedback from students, faculty and the extended community, we would need to achieve consensus before developing and socializing the new face of Mt. SAC.

The Approach

Loma collaborated with Mt. SAC’s mascot committee—a diverse group of student representatives and faculty members—to identify key issues with the existing brand and mascot. We then guided the committee through a specialized process to identify and implement a contemporary design that reflects the pride of the entire school and community. We considered the school’s history, indigenous roots, geographical connections and local animals that held special significance.

After new mascot brand was chosen by consensus of the many participants, we presented two similar, yet distinct, mascot concepts. These designs were then put to a vote by the college community. The winning design became the Mounties new mascot– “Rizzly the Grizzly.”

Measurable Results

A campus-wide launch event introduced the fresh face (and claws) of Mt. SAC, much to the delight of a fired-up student body. Just days later, Rizzly was prowling the sidelines, and doing so quite effectively.

Undoubtedly inspired by their new mascot, Mt. SAC’s football team won the Conference championship!

The Takeaway

We employed a ‘stakeholder inclusive’ process that proved very successful when rebranding the Mountain West Conference some years before (lauded by ESPN as “one of the most distinctive brands in sports.”) Working closely with our Mt. SAC client, we prioritized insights garnered in 4 community-wide surveys that brought in more than 12,000 diverse voices. A (very popular) Rizzly the Grizzly was the (roaring) result.

“Loma played a key role in helping us unify our campus and community!”
