Introducing the “Greatest Memorial Bronze of the Modern Age.”
Last Friday evening, LOMA’s livestream production of the inspiring ‘First Illumination’ ceremony unveiled what the Washington Post calls “the most important piece of civic art installed in the city in decades.” Created as the centerpiece of America’s National World War I Memorial, ‘A Soldier’s Journey’ becomes the largest free-standing bronze in the Western Hemisphere.
“It is a memorial about us, We the People. It is a project that represents the everyman, the ones who make this country possible.”
–Sabin Howard, sculptor
Viewed around the globe, this landmark event paid tribute to the 4.7 million Americans who served and sacrificed in the War That Changed the World. All of us at LOMA have been deeply honored to serve as the marketing and communications partner for the U.S. World War I Centennial Commission during its ten-year effort to build a fitting Memorial in the nation’s capital, a long-envisioned goal of many generations now fulfilled.
We will continue to support the Doughboy Foundation, steward of the magnificent Memorial, as it strives to “keep faith with the American Doughboy” through programs, projects and activities that educate the public about America’s participation in World War I.
